Behind every Rotary project is a group of people with their own experiences, skills, passions and stories. At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza, members were reminded just how much there is to discover about the people sitting around the table.
George Anne Sullivan, Alison Lythgow and Phil Key each shared a glimpse into the lives that brought them to Rotary. Their stories were very different, but each demonstrated the value of experience, community connection and a willingness to contribute.

George Anne Sullivan: A life in education and community
George Anne reflected on a long and varied career in education, family life and the many experiences that came with living and working in different communities.
Her journey included years in the education sector, time spent in regional communities and a return to Melbourne, where new opportunities and experiences awaited.
Throughout her life, community involvement has remained important. George Anne spoke warmly about Rotary and, in particular, the friendships and support that come with belonging to a club. Her contribution as an experienced educator, along with her involvement in Rotary leadership and club activities, has made her a valued member of the Rotary community.
Her story was a reminder that a lifetime of professional and personal experience continues to bring value to Rotary.
Alison Lythgow: From international finance to international service
Alison's career began in the United Kingdom after graduating with a degree in business. She entered banking through a graduate program before developing a specialisation in credit risk.
Over the following decade, she worked her way through increasingly senior roles, eventually leading a department responsible for developing credit-scoring systems used to assess lending applications.
In 1999, an opportunity brought Alison and her husband, Tony, to Melbourne. What they initially imagined would be a short Australian adventure became a new life for their family. With two young children and no established support network in Australia, Alison chose to become a full-time mum while Tony took up a role with the International Finance Corporation, part of the World Bank.
His work advising developing countries on financial infrastructure gave the family opportunities to travel and experience places they might never otherwise have visited. Those experiences also gave Alison a firsthand appreciation of the challenges facing developing communities and the importance of sustainable international development.
That perspective now informs her involvement in Rotary's International Service Committee.
Alison also spoke movingly about losing Tony after his illness, reflecting on the privilege of being able to care for him during his final years. With the arrival of her first grandchild, a baby girl, Alison is embracing the future and looking forward to the next chapter of her life and her contribution to Rotary.
Phil Key: Determination, adventure and a lesson in service
Phil's story began with humble beginnings and an early determination to build a better future.
After leaving school, he trained as a mechanic and worked long hours to establish himself. His career took him through automotive workshops, business ownership, a service station, used-car businesses, antiques and eventually real estate, where he spent 32 years.
Along the way, an unexpected opportunity opened the door to international adventure. In his early thirties, Phil joined a volunteer expedition to the Solomon Islands to help build a school.
The journey was far from comfortable. Reaching the remote community involved flights, canoes and a long walk uphill. Conditions were basic, resources were limited and the experience was challenging in ways the volunteers had not anticipated.
Yet Phil remembers the expedition as one of the best experiences of his life. The people, the work and the memories stayed with him long after he returned home.
His message to those preparing for their own international environmental expedition was heartfelt: make the most of the opportunity. The experiences that challenge us can become the ones we remember most.
The people behind the projects
These three stories offered a glimpse into the lives, experiences and perspectives that members bring to Rotary.
From education and professional expertise to international development, entrepreneurship and hands-on volunteering, each journey helps shape the way members contribute to their communities and support one another.
Rotary is about delivering projects and creating opportunities for positive change. It is also about friendship, learning from one another and bringing different skills and experiences together in the service of others.
Thank you to George Anne, Alison and Phil for sharing their stories and reminding us that every Rotarian has something valuable to contribute.
